About us

La Merced is a 501C3 nonprofit organization comprised of volunteer health care workers, business and legal professionals, engineers, contractors, educators, homemakers and students who have united for the common goal of helping our neighbors abroad. Currently, La Merced is focusing on Nicaragua.

Through its medical mission, La Merced provides complimentary medical care to the poor.   Although our anchor specialties are reconstructive surgery, dental medicine, orthopedic surgery and physical therapy,  we are able to provide care in other specialties — depending on the expressed needs of the people at a given time.   If you belong to a specialty of medicine not mentioned here, and you would like to participate in one of medical mission, please let us know.  We have a system in place to match any type of medical provider with a host physician in Nicaragua and patients in need of his or her care.

Through its community outreach program, La Merced provides assistance to social programs in the Managua.

Although La Merced developed out of a local church, we now are independent. We do, however, continue to work with the Church on common goals and endeavors.   Although the mission is based in Salisbury, Maryland, participants now travel from all over the United States.

La Merced is now partnered with University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Through this formal relationship, the organizations work hand-in-hand to seek funding and provide manpower for the medical missions.   Pharmacy students from UMES now serve as integral parts of the La Merced team.

La Merced is in the process of building a mutually beneficial relationship with Salisbury University.  Nursing students from the School of Nursing participated in the January 2017 medical mission.  More plan to attend in January 2018.

If you are interested in getting involved, we would be more than happy to find voluntary work for you in Nicaragua or stateside.
